‘Twas the night before training, when all through the lab
Not a process was running, not even prefab;
The GPUs were mounted in servers with care,
In hopes that convergence soon would be there;
The models were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of gradients danced in their heads;
And tech lead in their hoodie, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a debugging nap,
When out in the cluster there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to check what was the matter.
Away to the terminal I flew like a flash,
Typed in my password and cleared out the cache.
The monitors glowed with a curious light,
Giving lustre to log files that scrolled in the night,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature network, with eight hidden layers clear,
With a little old trainer so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick!
More rapid than backprop his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
“Now, BERT! now, GPT! now DALL-E and Stable!
On, Claude! on Llama! on, Falcon and Galactica!
To the top of the stack! to the top of the wall!
Now train away! train away! train away all!”
As neurons that before the wild synapse fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the cluster-top the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of data, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The whirring and humming of each little GPU.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the network St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in silicon, from his head to his foot,
And his circuits were all tarnished with pixels and soot;
A bundle of training data he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a researcher just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a keyboard he held tight in his teeth,
And the electricity encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a round silicon belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old AI,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of my sigh;
A wink of his LED and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the models; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his node,
And giving a nod, up the network he rode;
He sprang to his server, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
“Happy training to all, and to all a good night!”
